Inspiration During the Pandemic
The 2022 pandemic lockdowns accelerated the shift toward remote work, leading more people to pay closer attention to their appearance on video calls. This heightened self-image awareness drove a surge in demand for discreet dental correction solutions.
According to the 2022 annual report from Align Technology, the parent company of Invisalign, global shipments of clear aligners reached approximately 2.3 million. Similarly, Angelalign’s reports confirmed a 50% year-on-year growth in demand for invisible braces across Asia.
This rapid growth in the clear aligner market inspired Lulusmiles’founders — Oscar(涂毓麟), senior orthodontist Dr. Jiang Tielong, and Philip. They recognized that while demand was skyrocketing, high treatment costs and a lack of truly affordable options remained significant barriers for many.
Driven by this insight, the team set out to leverage technology to address this gap — combining AI-powered treatment planning, streamlined digital processes, and remote monitoring capabilities to make high-quality clear aligners accessible and affordable for everyone.
2023: The Conversation That Started a Smile Revolution
It all began in a coffee shop in 2023.
At a casual meet-up, three visionaries came together to spark what would become a revolution in accessible smile care.
Co-founder Oscar raised a critical question: “Traditional braces are visually unappealing, and existing clear aligner options are limited and often prohibitively expensive.”
Dr. Jiang Tielong, an experienced orthodontist, explained the core challenge: “Every patient’s teeth are unique. The process—from taking impressions and diagnosis to designing plans, obtaining doctor approval, and producing aligners—requires immense manual effort. This makes treatment slow and costly.”
Philip, an HKUST alumnus with a background in technology, proposed a transformative idea: “AI technology has advanced tremendously. We can use it to optimize the entire correction process—digital scanning, diagnostic analysis, treatment planning, and progress tracking—dramatically increasing efficiency and reducing costs.”
That conversation was the birth of Lulusmiles.
